Dominical is a laid-back coastal gem tucked between the jungle and the Pacific, where adventure meets tranquility. One of Dominical's most attractive attributes is its proximity to many beautiful waterfalls. Most of these waterfalls arent actually in the town of Dominical but they are close to Dominical making them great places to visit while you’re in the area. To get to these waterfalls, you need to be prepared for a long walk/hike, or you need a car (4x4 is best but not necessary). Waterfalls in this area are extremely clean, easy to find, and are the best way to beat the heat of the day.

Pozo Azul Waterfall in Dominicalito (free)
Pozo Azul Waterfall, known for its strikingly blue waters, is an idyllic spot for swimming and relaxing. Nestled in a lush forest, the waterfall flows into a large, inviting pool that’s perfect for cooling off after a hike. The pristine environment and vibrant blue hues of Pozo Azul make it a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Uvita Waterfall in Uvita ($5)
The Uvita Waterfall, easily accessible from the town center, is a charming natural retreat where visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear pool at the base of the falls. The waterfall features multiple cliff-jumping platforms as well as a natural rock slide that adds a fun, adventurous twist to your visit.
Surrounded by lush vegetation, this picturesque spot is perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The restaurant's entrance will charge you $5 but gives you access to their man-made platforms that make it easy to navigate and cliff jump.
Hidden Waterfall and Natural Pools in Uvita (free)
You will find this gorgeous hidden waterfall and natural pools just a bit further outside the town of Uvita. This spot is best visited during the rainy season, when there is more water and larger swimming pools. Reaching this spot requires crossing the river on foot or in a 4x4 vehicle. The river crossing is a good place to park if you don't want to cross with a car.
Portalon Waterfall in Portalon (free)
Portalón Waterfall is a peaceful and lesser-known natural attraction located near the quiet village of Portalón, between Dominical and Manuel Antonio. Surrounded by lush rainforest, this beautiful 15-foot waterfall flows into a clear, swimmable pool—perfect for a refreshing dip.
With its easy access, low crowds, and tranquil setting, Portalón Waterfall is a perfect off-the-beaten-path stop for nature lovers seeking a quiet escape in Costa Rica’s Central Pacific region.

Visit the Eco-Feria (Fridays)
Located near the town soccer field, the Eco Feria in Dominical is a lively market that focuses on organic and sustainable products, happening every Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM. Stroll through the market, listen to live music, and soak in the local vibes. It’s a great place to learn about local culture and sustainable practices, even if you don't buy anything.

Surf or Boogie Board at Dominical Beach
Catching waves is a must in Dominical, where the consistent surf break is one of the best in the region. The waves here can get pretty powerful with the right swell, making it a favorite spot for experienced surfers. That said, boogie boarders and beginners can still enjoy the water—just be sure to check conditions first, as the currents can be strong.
One of my favorite times to surf here is during sunset, when the sky lights up in pinks and oranges and the water glows with golden light. Dominical has a refreshingly authentic surf vibe—less crowded and more local than places like Nosara or Santa Teresa. You’ll often share the waves with friendly locals and even kids from the community, which adds to the town’s laid-back charm.

Dominical’s rocky beach isn't the best for beginner surfers or surf lessons, as navigating the rocky ocean floor isn’t very kind for beginner surfers who spend a lot of time in the shallow section of the beach.

Relax at Río Barú
(Crocodile Warning)
Nestled right next to Dominical lies the beautiful, crystal-clear Río Barú. This freshwater river offers a perfect spot to cool off in the tropical heat and is just a short walk from the town center. However, visitors should be aware of crocodiles, which frequently gather near the river mouth where it meets the ocean. These creatures pose a serious threat, as they've been known to prey on local pets and wildlife. While this sounds alarming, the river isn't entirely off-limits—about one kilometer upstream, you'll find a wide, shallow section where crocodiles can't lurk. This area is easily accessible by car, and on weekends it transforms into a local hangout spot, with people setting up hammocks, barbecuing, enjoying cold drinks, and soaking in the gorgeous natural setting.

AVOID THE CROCODILES by enjoying the river a bit further upstream, where the water is shallow and mixed with the saltwater of the sea.

How to get to Dominical?
Best International Airport to Fly Into
The closest and most convenient international airport for reaching Dominical is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), located in San José. This major airport has frequent international flights from North America, Europe, and beyond. From SJO, it takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by car to reach Dominical, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Alternative Option
You can also fly into Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, but keep in mind it’s farther away — about a 5 to 6-hour drive to Dominical. This option makes more sense if you’re planning to explore the Guanacaste region before heading south to the Dominical area.
Best Domestic Airport to Fly Into
For travelers already in Costa Rica, the nearest domestic airport is Quepos Airport (XQP), located roughly 50 minutes north of Dominical. Sansa Airlines operates regular domestic flights from San José (SJO) to Quepos. Flying can save you considerable time compared to overland travel, especially if you want to avoid the long drive.
Main Connecting Highways for Driving from the Airport
From San José (SJO):
Take Route 27 (Autopista del Sol) west toward Orotina, then connect to Route 34 (Costanera Sur) heading south along the Pacific coast, which will take you directly to Dominical. This route is scenic, with ocean views and well-maintained roads.
From Liberia (LIR):
Drive south via Route 1 (Interamericana Norte), then connect to Route 18, merge onto Route 27, and finally head south on Route 34 all the way to Dominical. While longer, this drive lets you experience the country’s diverse landscapes.
Private Shuttles Available
Several private shuttle services operate between San José, Liberia, and Dominical, offering a comfortable, door-to-door travel experience. Shuttles can be booked in advance, making them a convenient, stress-free option if you prefer not to drive or navigate public transport.

These shuttles usually require advance booking and follow set schedules, picking up travelers at hotels or designated spots. Public buses are the most economical way to get to Dominical. From San José, you can take a direct bus to Dominical operated by Tracopa. The trip takes about 4**–5 hours**, depending on stops and traffic. Buses leave from the Tracopa terminal in downtown San José and are a great option for budget travelers, though they’re slower and less flexible than shuttles or rental cars.

Dominical is a very small town. The kind of town you can walk through in around 10 minutes. However, other parts of Dominical are more spread out and harder to get to without your own transportation. Many attractions like beaches, waterfalls, and surf spots are located outside the main village area. Depending on your preferences and plans, here’s a breakdown of the most common transportation options available in Dominical:
Public Transportation
Dominical is connected by public buses that run along the Costanera Highway (Route 34), linking it with nearby destinations like Uvita, Ojochal, and San Isidro. Buses are a budget-friendly way to get around, but they mainly run between towns and don’t easily access more remote beaches, waterfalls, or surf spots.

Cost: Very affordable, typically ranging from ₡500 to ₡2,000 CRC ($1–$4 USD) per trip.

Bike or Scooter
