Shared shuttles are a convenient and cost-effective option, providing door-to-door service. The journey takes about 6 hours, including the ferry crossing. How to get from San Jose to Montezuma by car or taxi

To Montezuma from San Jose By Rental Car or taxi

Easiest <> 5-6hrs <> $300

Traveling from San José to Montezuma by rental car or taxi typically takes 5-6 hours. Driving yourself offers the flexibility to stop and explore along the way, such as the scenic Nicoya Peninsula. However, the route involves a ferry crossing from Puntarenas to Paquera, which requires planning around the ferry schedule and an additional fee. Taxis provide a hassle-free, though more expensive, alternative, especially if you’re uncomfortable driving in Costa Rica. This option offers convenience and the ability to travel at your own pace, but it's important to be prepared for the ferry logistics.

Writer's Tips:

  • Use our Pura Vida Traveling exclusive link to receive up to 10% off and additional rental benefits.

  • Geta 4x4 if you want to get close to nature!

  • To easily pass the highway tolls, be prepared with some Colones or use the tap-to-pay option to pay with your credit card or phone.

  • Book a rental car well in advance to save money.

  • Contact your credit card company to see if your car is insured as a benefit to your card (this is very common).

  • Negotiate the taxi fare in advance and make sure the taxi is insured (red or orange cabs are registered and insured).

The public bus is the most economical way to travel from San José to Montezuma, although it requires the most time. There are two daily direct buses from central San Jose to Montezuma. These direct buses are among the most expensive in Costa Rica, but they include your ferry ride across the Nicoya Peninsula.

San Jose to Montezuma (6hrs) ($16) (includes ferry ride)

The direct bus to Montezuma from San José leaves from the Terminal 7-10 bus station in central San José in the Coca-Cola neighborhood. Transportes Cobanó is the bus company, and the ride takes about 6 hours. Our last report is that these direct buses leave at 7:30 am and 3:30 pm.

*Traveling to Terminal 7-10 in central San Jose is the safest bet for catching this direct bus; however, there is another option for those who are near the SJO airport and are okay with a bit of risk and adventure. If you are near the Airport, you don’t have to head all the way to the 7-10 Terminal. Instead, take a taxi to the Villa Bonita Bridge in Alajuela. The bus to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais/Montezuma passes this spot, but it may take a while to get there after leaving downtown. You can pay the driver directly and avoid the hassle of traveling into the city to catch this bus.

Writer's Tips:

  • This is one of Costa Rica's longer public bus routes. Opting for a shared shuttle is recommended to cut down your travel time.

  • Ubers are available in San Jose. Using Uber to get to the San Jose bus terminal can be easier and less expensive than taking public buses. (*Be aware that Uber is not legal yet in Costa Rica)

  • Cost: While flights may be more expensive than other modes of transport, they save you valuable time and offer stunning aerial views of Costa Rica's landscapes.

  • Luggage: Be aware of your airline's luggage restrictions or costs. It can get expensive if you have additional luggage.
