La Fortuna Waterfall

The famous La Fortuna Waterfall is one of the most photographed spots in the region.

What to know:

Important: the climb back up is steep—bring water and take breaks.

Visit El Salto Waterfall and Rope Swing

El Salto is one of La Fortuna’s best free attractions and a favorite spot among locals. Just a few minutes from town, this hidden gem features a small waterfall, a refreshing natural swimming hole, and the famous rope swing that lets visitors swing into the river below. It’s the perfect place to cool off, enjoy nature, and add a little adventure to your day.

What to Know

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • Facilities: No official facilities, so bring water and any essentials

  • Trails: Short, informal trails along the river offer a peaceful walk through the forest

  • Tip: Visit on a sunny day and wear water shoes, as the rocks can be slippery

If you're looking for a fun, budget-friendly activity in La Fortuna, El Salto is a great place to spend a few hours enjoying Costa Rica's natural beauty.

Hanging Bridges & Zipline Adventures

One of our favorite things to do in La Fortuna is to experience the rainforest from above. The combination of hanging bridges, a scenic sky tram, and incredible viewpoints makes this one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the Arenal region.

At Sky Adventures, the journey to the top of the mountain is an experience in itself. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano, Arenal Lake, and the surrounding rainforest. On a clear day, the scenery is simply unforgettable.

Top Experiences

  • Walk across hanging bridges high above the rainforest floor

  • Ride the sky tram to spectacular viewpoints

  • Soar over the jungle on a zipline adventure

  • Enjoy panoramic views of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake

Why we love it

  • Incredible views that showcase the best of the Arenal region

  • A chance to experience the rainforest from ground level to the treetops

  • Great opportunities to spot birds, monkeys, and other wildlife

  • Perfect for both adventure seekers and nature lovers

If you're only going to do one canopy experience in La Fortuna, this is the one we recommend.

Visit Tenorio Volcano National Park & Río Celeste

A visit to Tenorio Volcano National Park is one of the most unforgettable day trips from La Fortuna. The park is home to the famous Río Celeste, known for its stunning turquoise-blue water that seems almost unreal. The well-maintained hiking trail takes visitors through lush rainforest to highlights like the Río Celeste Waterfall, scenic viewpoints, and Los Teñideros, where two clear streams meet and create the river’s vibrant blue color.

What to know

  • Tickets required: Entrance tickets are mandatory and often sell out, so book in advance

  • Swimming: Swimming is not allowed inside the national park

  • Free swimming spot: About 1 mile (1.5 km) before the park entrance, you'll find a free access point where you can swim in Río Celeste

  • Hike length: Approximately 3.7 miles (6 km) round trip
