Easiest <> 5-6hrs <> $300

Traveling from San José to Montezuma by rental car or taxi typically takes 5-6 hours. Driving yourself offers the flexibility to stop and explore along the way, such as the scenic Nicoya Peninsula. However, the route involves a ferry crossing from Puntarenas to Paquera, which requires planning around the ferry schedule and an additional fee. Taxis provide a hassle-free, though more expensive, alternative, especially if you’re uncomfortable driving in Costa Rica. This option offers convenience and the ability to travel at your own pace, but it's important to be prepared for the ferry logistics.

The direct bus to Montezuma from San José leaves from the Terminal 7-10 bus station in central San Jose in the Coca-Cola neighborhood. Transportes Cobanó is the bus company and the ride takes about 6hrs. Our last report is that these direct buses leave at 7:30 am and 3:30 pm.

*Traveling to Terminal 7-10 in central San Jose is the safest bet for catching this direct bus, however, there is another option for those who are near the SJO airport and are okay with a bit of risk and adventure. If you are near the Airport, you don’t have to head all the way to the 7-10 Terminal. Instead, have a taxi take you to the Villa Bonita Bridge in Alajuela. The bus to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais/Montezuma passes this spot about however long it takes to get there after leaving downtown. You can pay the driver directly and avoid the hassle of traveling into the city to catch this bus.

Writers Tips:

  • This is one of Costa Rica's longer voyages by public bus. Opting for a shared shuttle is recommended to cut down your travel time.

  • Ubers are available in San Jose. Using Uber to get to the San Jose bus terminal can be easier than taking public buses without costing too much. (*Be aware that Uber is not legal yet in Costa Rica)
